It all began with Don the Beachcomber. Not with his original Hollywood haunt, but rather the first Beachcomber franchise, which Don’s wife Sunny Sund opened in Chicago in the 1940s while her (soon to be ex-) husband was serving in the war in Europe. The Chicago Beachcomber so successfully embellished the original’s driftwood Bohemian atmosphere while serving Don’s signature concoctions that two of its regular customers, the Thornton brothers, Jack and Bob, decided to escape the harsh Chicago winters for good by opening their own Polynesian palace in the milder Floridian climes.
